Welcome Elliot Brown Watches to WatchGauge!

Welcome Elliot Brown Watches to WatchGauge!

Elliot Brown is a micro brand that was founded by Englishmen Ian Elliot and Alex Brown. Two gentlemen who’ve combined their passion for watches and love and experience of extreme sports as inspiration for their brand!

…And, I couldn’t be more proud of the fact that they’ve chosen WatchGauge as their very first retail partner in the United States!

You’ll hear me say it over and over but I feel is important:  I have spent the past 12 months carefully planning the launch of WatchGauge and of course, one of the most critical aspects is choosing the correct partner brands!  Our recipe is quite simple and it comes from my own personal taste as well as my 18 years of experience in the watch industry…

Each brand must fill the following criteria:

  • Aesthetically pleasing – Partner brands must have a look that makes me say “That’s a great looking watch!”.
  • Superior Quality – The construction, materials used, and attention to details and finishing are a must.
  • Well Priced – A great watch for a price that I feel is either on par or better than what a client will be purchasing.
  • Great people – When partnering with a brand, I want to be in business with people of high moral ethics, work ethics, and a great vision for the brand and its’ future.
  • I’d personally want to own one – If I can look at a brand and say that I’d be happy and proud to spend my personal, hard-earned money on one, then I’m happy to sell them as well.

About the Founders

Elliot Brown Watches exemplifies every one of those check points.  They all have a handsome and timeless look, but just enough modern thrown in.  What you can’t see is the technology they’ve developed for shock absorption so the movements can handle much stronger shock and adventure!  The prices are very fair and the partners have what I like to see in a business relationship for sure.  Finally, I certainly would love to own a few of them!

Both Elliot and Brown have a history of success in the watch industry.  As stated on their website “Ian Elliot was co-founder of Animal back in ’88, and built the brand up from a single, innovative, functional product – an ‘unbreakable’ watch-strap.  Alex Brown turned down a job at Cartier because it sounded more interesting to establish Animal’s watch department, where he stayed for seventeen years.”

About the Watches

For our first foray into Elliot Brown, I’ve chosen 2 collections to start with.  They Tyneham and the Canford.  Both have a classically styled look but with a bit of modern thrown in, and in 20 years will be just as wearable and stylish as they are today.

Tyneham

The Tyneham collection was what made my antenna perk up upon first seeing Elliot Brown.  I’m a sucker for power reserve indicators and this model has one in a position that I’ve never seen on any other watch.  It is a small hand that stems from the one o’clock position.  For those of you unaware of what a power reserve indicator is for, I’ll explain.  In an automatic watch, which the Tyneham is, the movement will wind itself as the wearer moves throughout the day.  Once taken off, that watch will stop running after about 40 hours.  Think of the power reserve indicator like the gas gauge in your car, however it will tell you how much wind is left in your watch.  (full details and specs of the Tyneham at the bottom of this post)

The Canford

As I had mentioned, Ian and Alex have a passion for extreme sports.  Any watch guy will tell you that while performing many acts of crazy such as Big Wave Surfing or Off-Road Motorbiking, it might be best if you weren’t wearing your automatic watch as the parts inside are quite a bit more delicate than a quartz (battery) watch.  I personally wear my automatic watches while surfing or flying fighter planes (true story for another time), but it can be risky for your watch.  All of this said, the Canford houses a Swiss Made IsaSwiss 331-103 quartz movement with custom date printing at 4 o’clock.  In addition to that, the brand has also developed a special shock absorption system which further protects the movement from shock damage.  This is a serious, do-anything watch!
